Kazmir quiets Red Sox at Fenway

Devil Rays rookie gets first win in nearly a month with six solid innings

? Scott Kazmir overcame control problems to hold Boston to three hits over six innings, and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays beat the Red Sox, 3-1, on Monday night, sending them to their sixth loss in seven games.

“I’m definitely disappointed, but Kazmir shut us down,” Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon said. “Most importantly, the team’s got to start a winning streak.”

The most exciting moment of the game came when Curt Schilling covered on Julio Lugo’s grounder to first in the ninth. Lugo, who arrived at the bag at the same time as Schilling, was called safe by first-base umpire Dana DeMuth, but Schilling argued and the call was overturned.

An enraged Lou Piniella stormed out of the dugout and argued before home-plate umpire Laz Diaz ejected the Devil Rays manager from the game.

The Red Sox left the field as quickly as possible, but could not score off in the bottom half off Danys Baez, who earned his 17th save.

Kazmir (4-7) walked six to bring his AL-leading total to 62, struck out seven and allowed just one unearned run.

“I was a little bit rusty in the first,” said Kazmir, who hadn’t started since July 8 because of the All-Star break. “I had 10 days off. It was just getting the kinks out.”
