¢ Harmon-Thomas Strikes Gold: Lawrence’s Alexa Harmon-Thomas won gold medals in the long jump, 100, 400 and triathlon (high jump, shot put, 200) in the U-9 division of the Region 8 AAU Junior Olympics track championships in Joplin, Mo. In the U-10 competition, Lawrence’s Bridgette Berry earned silver medals in the long jump and high jumps and a bronze in the triathlon. Both qualified for the National AAU Junior Olympics in New Orleans.

¢ Nieto Net Standout: David Nieto of Lawrence won the boys singles championship of the North American Indian Tennis Assn. championships in Sunnyvale, Calif. Nieto, 14, teamed with Kyle Tolbert of Tulsa, Okla., to win the doubles crown.

¢ U-14 Sidewinders Champs: Lawrence U-14 Sidewinders won the AABC state championship last weekend in Topeka. Team members are Brett Anderson, Jack Caywood, John Flory, Dorian Green, Matt Green, Gabe Jacobson, Cameron Schmidt, Chandler Schmidt, Mitch Werts, Sam Willoughby and Ben Wilson. Coaches are Ben Mugridge, Brian Pickel and Bob Werts. The Sidewinders qualified for the seven-state regional in Farmington, N.M., and are accepting donations to offset travel costs. ¢ U-12 Sidewinders Third: Lawrence U-12 Sidewinders finished third in the AAA division of the USSSA state baseball tournament in Manhattan. Team members are Evan Manning, Jonathan Pederson, Trenton Sheppard, Austin Anderson, Jackson Ferguson, Jordan Parsons, Sam Prososki, Eric Watson, Mack Hartwell, Tim Lewis, Rowan Cook and Aaron Gile. Coaches are Greg Anderson, Doug Hartwell, Kent Ferguson, Adam Gabriel and Danny Manning.

¢ SWJH Football: Southwest Junior High’s football camp for incoming freshmen and eighth graders will be conducted next Monday through Friday. Sessions will begin at 9 a.m. For information, call Skip Bennett at 691-5955.

¢ Cheerleaders Camp: Lawrence Youth Football Inc. will conduct a camp for potential cheerleaders from noon to 4 p.m. July 23 at Holcom Rec Center. Youths in grades 2 through 7 are eligible. For information, call 979-6487 or go to lawrenceyouthfootball.org.

¢ Freedom Runners: Lawrence’s Dee Boeck and Brian Daldorph earned age-group titles in the Lenexa Freedom Run 10K. In the 5K portion, Lawrence’s D.J. Hilding and Scott McVey and Tonganoxie’s Wally Brawner captured age-group competition. Second places in the July 4 races went to Dane Johnson, Betsy Lee and Keith Dowell. Thirds were notched by Molly McVey, Marsha Odgers, Paul Boone, Ken Johnson, Robyn Lee, Becky McClure, Lori Cakler and Gene Wee.

¢ Jayhawk Co-Champs: Chad Roesler and Mike Naegele each shot a two-under-par 70 and were co-champs of Sunday’s Jayhawk Golf Club weekly tournament at Alvamar. Van Reichert shot 73. In net scoring, Richard High was low with a 70. Keith Wallace and Frank Lewis both carded 69s and Boyd Abts had 70.

¢ Kickball Tourney: Entry deadline is Aug. 10 for a summer coed kickball tournament Aug. 13 at Clinton Lake Softball Complex. Teams are guaranteed three games. Registration forms are available at city rec centers or on the Web at www.lprd.org.

¢ Cards State Champs: Eudora Cardinals won the USSSA U-13 Class A state baseball tournament last weekend in Blue Valley. Team members are Connor Scott, Casey Boone, Austin Vickers, Colton Lynch, Evan Cleveland, Joel Lauer, Reece Long, Matt Schultz, Coty Stoneking and Matthew Jump.

¢ Dodgeball, Kickball: An organizational meeting for the city’s adult fall dodgeball and kickball programs will be Wednesday at the South Park Rec Center. ¢ LTC Gold Medalists: Monica Howard, Kameron Demby and Scott Penny of the Lawrence Track Club earned gold medals at the USATF Region 9 Junior Olympics last weekend in Tulsa, Okla. Other LTC medalists were Whitney Demby, Jed Borovik, Christopher Smith, Kristina Taylor and Dylan Hedges. Monica Howard, Alison Howard and Hedges also medaled at the AAU Region 8 Junior Olympics in Joplin, Mo., and qualified for the national meet in New Orleans.

¢ Kutey Hole-in-One: Kelly Kutey used a pitching wedge to ace the par-three, 110-yard No. 8 hole Tuesday at Alvamar Country Club. Witnesses were Connie Winters, Kelly Ponzer and Raena Borth.

¢ KVSA Leagues: Registration for Kaw Valley Soccer Assn. fall and spring leagues is under way. Openings are available at the recreation, club and premier levels. For forms, visit kawvalleysoccer.com.

¢ Cubs U-12 Advance: Lawrence Cubs U-12 placed fourth out of 26 teams at the Class AA Hap Dumont state tournament last weekend in Pratt and qualified for nationals in Bartlett, Tenn. Team members are Caleb Bowen, Austin Clapp, Matt Cole, Steve Cowser, Sha Detwiler, Rich Dibenedetto, Corbin Francisco, Alex Laughlin, Cody Oller, Zach Pence and Trent Robb. Coaches are Rex Porter, Jeff Mitchell and Gary Clapp.

¢ Softball champions: The Phenix Fyler of Lawrence tied for first place in the JCGAA 16-under A league with a 9-1 record.
