Googols of Fun adds preschool programming

A Lawrence children’s center is building on its “edutainment” motto.

Googols of Fun is adding preschool programming to its center at 4931 W. Sixth St.

The two-year-old business already mixes entertainment and education through a variety of features, including an arcade and “World Around You” interactive exhibits – from the high-flying “Bernoulli Blower” to the reflective “Look into Infinity” tunnel.

The new preschool curriculum, called Googols of Learning, has room for 27 children aged 2 through 5. Students can be enrolled on a full- or part-time basis from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays.

“It’s a natural segue for us,” said Amy Gottschamer, Googols president.

Googols will conduct an open house for the program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 23.

Jan Greenberg, program director, instructs 2-year-olds Kylie Greenberg, left, and Audrey Nguyen-Hoang.

Apple sales, profit surge on iPod

Apple Computer Inc. saw sales jump 75 percent in its latest quarter – and net income more than quadruple – as sizzling sales of iPod music players led the company to what CEO Steve Jobs called its best quarterly performance.

Apple’s profit rose to $320 million, or 37 cents per share, for the three months ended June 25. That was up from the $61 million and 8 cents per share the company reported in the year-ago quarter.

Sales surged 75 percent to $3.52 billion from $2.01 billion last year.

During the quarter the company shipped 1.2 million Macintosh computers and 6.2 million iPods, the overwhelming leader among digital music players. The numbers represent a 35 percent increase in Mac sales and more than a six-fold jump for iPods from the third quarter in 2004.
