Hot, hazy and chance for afternoon thunderstorms

Hurricane Dennis might yet have an effect on Lawrence’s weather — there’s a slight chance of few thunderstorms popping up today, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We could see an isolated thunderstorm sparking off in the afternoon,” Schack said.

But most of today’s forecast calls for continued hot and hazy conditions, she said.

At 8 a.m., the temperature was 70 degrees, with northwest 5-mph winds and an 87 percent humidity. The temperature will climb to 85 at noon and reach an afternoon high of 91 degrees, she said.

Clouds will work their way into the area this afternoon, which could bring the chance for thunderstorms in northeast Kansas. The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms this afternoon after 1 p.m.

“Any activity we would see would come to an end in the evening,” Schack said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to a low of 69 by early Thursday morning, she said.

Thursday will continue to be hot and hazy, with the high reaching 92 under partly cloudy skies.

“Again, an isolated thunderstorm can’t be ruled out on Thursday,” Schack said.

Friday will be mostly sunny, with the low starting at 70 degrees and climbing to a high of 93 by Friday afternoon.

“I think we’ll stay in the 90s for quite a few days. Get used to it,” Schack said.
