Angels cruise to 13-3 win over Goobers

The Blue Angels used good pitching, great infield play and a steady torrent of clutch hits to win a 15-U Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Assn. game against the Goobers, 13-3, Wednesday at Holcom.

Jessica Wyatt pitched three strong innings of the four-inning game. She demonstrated great control by giving up few walks and wild pitches, the typical source of countless runs in little league play. The Goobers swung the bat well, but more often than not, they hit balls to the Angels infielders, who were ready for them.

Goobers player Emily Coatney takes a cut in the on-deck circle during a Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Assn. game against the Blue Angels on July 5th at Holcom. The Blue Angels won the game 13-3.

“Our defense played well,” Angels coach Doug Gaston said. “The routine plays are the big plays in a game like this and we made them all.”

Emily Bracciano, using her strong throwing arm and the ability to stay in front of the ball to make several sensational plays, had an outstanding game at shortstop for the Angels.

The Goobers got on the board first when Kylie Wampler scored a run. Angels pitcher Wyatt and second baseman Jaymie Hardtarfer made sure the Goobers didn’t score any more, by both making tough stops on a ground ball and throwing to first for outs.

The Goobers maintained their lead in the bottom of the inning with pitcher Miranda Cobell leading the way. After allowing Hardtarfer to reach on a walk and advance to third base, the Goobers put together a nice defensive play to prevent a run.

Goobers catcher Olivia Johnson retrieved Cobell’s wild pitch and threw the ball to Cobell who was covering the plate well ahead of Hardtarfer, who had broken for home on the play. Hardtarfer tried to head back to third, but Cobell fired it to third baseman Abbie Ramos. Ramos then threw the ball back to Cobell, who tagged out Hardtarfer.

The Goobers threatened again in the second inning when they loaded the bases after a series of walks. But Wyatt recovered a ground ball and threw to catcher Kate Mathers for a force out at the plate to prevent a run from scoring.

The Angels racked up five runs in the bottom of the inning. Murray had a two-run double to lead the scoring spree. Katie Gaston, Kaela Severa, Mathers, Lindsey Murray and Wyatt all crossed the plate to reach the five-run-per-inning league limit. The Goobers showed signs of life in the top of the third inning. Janesah Denny ripped a double to center field. Johnson then doubled to score Denny, who made a nice slide at the plate for the Goobers’ second run of the game.

Bracciano made several nice plays in the inning at shortstop. With Johnson on second and ready to go to third, Bracciano looked back to the bag before firing the ball to first base for the second out of the inning. Bracciano also made the first of the inning on a ground ball off the bat of Wampler.

The Angels added three more runs in the bottom of the frame to take an 8-2 lead. Goobers third baseman Emily Coatney caught a pop-up to end the inning.

Ashley Denning scored a run for the Goobers in the top of the fourth, and April Miller had a nice hit to right field.

The Blue Angels added five more in the bottom of the frame to end the game.

Goobers coach Richard Ramos took the loss in stride and is just happy with the way his team has played this year.

“This is the first time this team’s been together,” Ramos said. “We’ve had a winning season, so that’s pretty good for a new team.”
