Brett Yulich, 18, son of Mitch and Cindy Yulich, Lawrence, received the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouting, during an Eagle Court of Honor ceremony June 20 at First Christian Church in Lawrence.
Yulich has been a member of Boy Scout Troop 53 since 1999. He began his scouting career with Quail Run Pack 3072 in 1995. He earned the Arrow of Light, Cub Scouting’s highest award, and the Twentier Award.
As a member of Troop 53, Yulich’s leadership positions included patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader. He earned 27 merit badges while working toward his Eagle Rank. He is a brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow honor camping society. His Eagle project was to build a climbing wall for the gymnasium at New York Elementary School.
Yulich attended Camp Alexander in Colorado several times and participated in Scouting High Adventures at Canoe Base (Boundary Waters), Grand Tetons; Florida Sea Base in Key West, Fla.; and Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M.
Yulich is a senior at Lawrence High School and is a member of Plymouth Congregational Church.
Yulich is a member of the Lawrence High Auto Club, the Lawrence Antique Auto Club and the Lawrence High Link Crew.
¢ The Heart of America Council’s 2005 Rotary Camp for Scouts with severe disabilities was June 27-July 1. There were 58 Scouts and 93 unit, program and support staff in attendance.
Staffers from Pelathe District included: Tom Sheely, camp director; Danny Keller, Rotary troop scoutmaster; Meloday Volek, head nurse; Zack Owen, Troop 59 program staff; Kelly Taylor, Troop 59 program staff; Will Armstrong, Troop 55 unit staff; Bill Berkowitz, Adventure Crew 2691 and Troop 52 unit staff; Jack Berkowitz, Troop 52 and Adventure Crew 2691 unit staff; Jake Christiros, Troop 55 unit staff; and Levi Klundt, Troop 61 unit staff. Staffers reported to camp June 24 and they left July 2.
¢ Cub Scout Pack 3077, chartered by the Sunflower School PTO, had a “Pack Overnighter” May 20-22 at Camp Bromelsick. Scouts and families participated in disc golf, a nature hike, an obstacle course, fishing, building a first aid kit, Capture the Flag, and building and launching bottle rockets. Each participant also helped prepare their own lunch and breakfast.
Thirteen Members of the Pack attended Pelathe District Day Camp June 6-10 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. The theme for this year’s program was “Diamonds in the Rough, Celebrating 75 Years of Cub Scouting.” Cubs attending were: Vinnie Barker, Cade Burghart, Cy Burghart, Noah Christilles, Jacob DiVilbiss, Sam Dykes, Sam Goodwin, Marshall Griffin, Michael Heschmeyer, Lucas Mackey, Jack Ryan, Jack Strange and Miller Wolf.
¢ Twenty Scouts and 13 adult leaders from Troop 59, chartered by the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, recently returned from a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, N.M.
The group departed Lawrence on June 6, and traveled to La Junta, Colo., to visit the Koshare Indian Museum and to watch Koshare dancers. They then traveled to Great Sand Dunes National Park and on to Taos, N.M. They arrived at Philmont Scout Ranch on June 8.
The group was split into four crews; each selected an itinerary based on the area of Philmont they wanted to explore, the distance they wanted to hike, and the programs that captured their interest. Each crew backpacked between 60 miles and 95 miles over a period of 11 days. Scouts and adults participated in such events and activities as spar pole climbing, challenge courses, chuck wagon dinners, rock climbing, mine tours, blacksmithing, panning for gold and a variety of campfire programs.
The Scouts returned to Lawrence June 20. Scouts and adult members attending were: Dwight Hilpman, Cory Judson, Brian Workman, Brent Wilson, Kevin Workman, Joe Stogsdill, Brock Norwood, Bryce Wilson, Evan Hilpman, Daniel Bergman, Dean Wilson, Mark Workman, Brian Norwood, Mark Stogsdill, Bob Corkins, Laurie Marienau, Zack King, Nolan Kappleman, Keagan Taylor, John Bergman, Bryce Best, Logan Marienau, Jeff Standing, Tim Hagen, Henry Reiske, Christopher Neal, Brenda Kappleman, Bob Hagen, Mike Taylor, Jon Corkins, Dave Sutheimer, Sam Sutheimer and Mark Gleeson.
