Hoover slam sparks Raiders

? Jake Hoover’s grand slam in the fifth inning was a devastating blow, helping the Lawrence Raiders roll to a 19-3 rout of Chanute Post 1 on Friday.

With two outs and facing a two-strike count, Hoover delivered a blast over the right-center-field wall.

“We kind of had some room to breathe after that,” Raiders coach Kevin Tucker said.

Lawrence posted seven runs in the seventh, but by then the victory was well in the Raiders’ grasp. Matt Wingert improved to 4-1 with the victory, Tyler Knight had four RBIs, Brian Heere was 4-for-5, and Brett Lisher was 3-for-5 with three RBIs for the Raiders (23-5).

“We took advantage of some walks and hit-by-pitches and mixed in some good hits,” Tucker said.

The Raiders travel today to Claremore, Okla., for a doubleheader against a squad Lawrence beat, 6-3, in June at the Al Ice Memorial Woodbat Classic. Lawrence will stick around for a single game Sunday against Claremore.

“They’re a really well-coached team. They play really well,” Tucker said of Claremore. “We haven’t lost to a team from Kansas yet, so this will be a great test.”
