KU announces new logo

Trajan

It’s new, improved – and still blue.

Kansas University today unveiled the logo it will use to join the Jayhawk and the university seal as the centerpiece of a new visual identity system.

The Trajan design, one of four designs submitted to the public for their input last May, is the pick after months of study.

“We wanted a logo that could represent KU’s strong tradition and academic rigor, unify our schools and campuses and endure for generations,” David Johnston, director of marketing, said. “We believe this customized KU in Trajan typeface, a strong but elegant mark, best satisfies these criteria.”

Later this month designers will create a “signature,” which is the logo combined with the university’s full name. Then a set of guidelines will be created to specify how and when the mark and signation, seal and Jayhawk should appear in campus, school and department names and on any printing and stationery.

The new logo will be phased in beginning in the fall.

Later, guidelines will be developed for signs, merchandising and the logo’s use on the Web.

“I look forward to unveiling the full visual identity system in the fall,” said Chancellor Robert Hemenway.

Hemenway said the ultimate goal is to have a logo that all of KU’s campuses, schools and departments can easily use that will build on KU’s reputation.

“This visual system, in conjunction with our integrated marketing effort, will align us with leading large public universities such as the universities of Oregon, Maryland and North Carolina and Arizona State University, who efficiently manage their visual communications and take seriously the task of telling their story to the public,” Hemenway said.
