MTV plans to visit home of the dukes

Covington, Ga. – The home of the first five episodes of “The Dukes of Hazzard” will host MTV when it comes to film a special on the history of the late 1970s show.

The show will feature the jumping of “General Lee,” the Duke boys’ car, at Covington’s Oxford College – the same spot the car was jumped for the show 26 years ago.

The special is meant to hype “The Dukes of Hazzard” movie, starring Seann William Scott, Johnny Knoxville and Jessica Simpson, set to be released Aug. 5.

Travis Bell, president of the General Lee Fan Club and organizer of the annual “Dukes of Hazzard” reunion in Covington, will serve as historian for the 30-minute program, called “Your Movie Show.”

Cruise’s anti-psychiatry flap draws another critic

Trenton, N.J. – Actress Brooke Shields has an ally in her war of words with Tom Cruise over her use of prescriptions drugs to treat postpartum depression: New Jersey’s acting governor.

“Tom Cruise knows as much about postpartum depression as I do about acting, and he should stick to acting and not talk about women who need help,” said Richard J. Codey, whose wife, Mary Jo, has struggled with the illness.

Cruise criticized Shields for taking antidepressants, and became particularly passionate about the issue in an interview on “Today.” Cruise is a follower of Scientology, which teaches that psychiatry is a destructive pseudo-science.

Cruise said there was no such thing as chemical imbalances that need to be corrected with drugs, and that depression could be treated with exercise and vitamins. Shields has called that “a disservice to mothers everywhere.”

Mary Jo Codey, 49, a kindergarten teacher, has openly discussed her struggles with postpartum depression.

Rockin’ wedding plans

Los Angeles – Multiplatinum singer Pink is reportedly getting married.

The 25-year-old proposed to her boyfriend of nearly four years – motocross racer Carey Hart – during a race in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., Us Weekly reported.

The singer, whose real name is Alecia Moore, reportedly wrote ‘Will you marry me’ on a pit board, which Hart saw while he was racing.

The couple met at the 2001 X Games in Las Vegas.

In 2002, Pink won a Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals for her cover of “Lady Marmalade” with Lil’ Kim, Mya and Christina Aguilera.

Hart will appear on the fifth season of the reality show “The Surreal Life.” The premiere is Friday.

For a good cause

Buffalo, N.Y. – Goo Goo Dolls bassist Robby Takac may call Los Angeles home now, but he’s never far from his hometown.

He is in the schools supplying donated instruments collected by his Music is Art Foundation. He’s at the Albright-Knox Art Museum curating an exhibit. He’s helping an HMO raise awareness of lead paint-related illnesses. And he’s brainstorming with his alma mater, Medaille College, on music instruction.

Takac’s not about to give up his day job. The Goo Goo Dolls – Takac, Johnny Rzeznik and Mike Malinin – are at work on a new album.

“I don’t consider myself any kind of, like, philanthropist, or any sort of weird, self-righteous savior of the universe or anything like that,” Takac, 40, said with a laugh. “It’s just, coincidentally, I’m having the time of my life and great things are happening, so I may as well keep it rolling.”

Jolie visits Live 8 site

St. Austell, England – Actress Angelina Jolie brought her 3-year-old son, Maddox, to the Live 8 concert featuring top African musicians on Saturday in Cornwall.

“With all that we have in the world, we can fix what is happening in Africa, we can save lives, we can turn it around,” Jolie, a U.N. goodwill ambassador, told reporters.

Senegalese superstar Youssou N’Dour was headlining the bill, which featured more than 18 acts from 14 countries, including three-time Grammy nominee Angelique Kidjo, a native of Benin.

The “Africa Calling” concert and a Live 8 concert in Johannesburg, South Africa, were organized after criticism that African artists had been largely excluded from music marathon aimed at raising awareness of Africa’s poverty.

The other concerts Saturday were in London and in the other countries that make up the Group of Eight major industrial nations – the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan and Russia.
