Hoover helps Raiders romp

? Jake Hoover pitched a complete-game six-hitter and helped his cause with a first-inning grand slam as the Lawrence Raiders beat Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest, 7-3, in Legion baseball Friday in the Bartlesville tournament.

Hoover (4-1) allowed just a single run in the fourth and two runs in the seventh.

Lawrence (20-3) bolted to a 6-0 first-inning lead on Hoover’s slam and a two-run homer from Tyler Knight.

Tommy Fitzgerald drove in the Raiders’ other run in the fifth.

“We had that big first inning, then Jake just calmed their bats down,” Raiders coach Kevin Tucker said. “He was ahead of the batters and had control. He just had a great overall performance.”

Lawrence will face Fort Scott at 5 p.m. today.
