Mostly sunny holiday weekend ahead

Chance of showers overnight Sunday into Monday

Fog was shrouding much of eastern Kansas this morning, creating some visibility problems for area commuters.

“Once that morning fog burns off (by 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.), I think we see plenty of sunshine,” said Tim Reith, 6News meteorologist. “What a great way to start off the month.”

Reith said the thunderstorms that rumbled through on Thursday left just under an inch of rain in Lawrence and two to three inches in surrounding areas. But today and Saturday are expected to be dry, he said.

“It looks like a great start to the holiday weekend,” he said.

At 8 a.m. the temperature was 68, with a 90 percent humidity and calm winds. The high will reach 86 today under mostly sunny skies, Reith said. Winds will be out of the northeast, from 8 to 12 mph.

More clouds will move in tonight, with the overnight low dropping to 68 by early Saturday morning, Reith said. The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 a.m.

Saturday will have mostly sunny skies, warming to a high of 90 by the afternoon, Reith said. Winds will be 10 to 15 mph from the south, with gusts as high as 25 mph. The National Weather Service says there’s a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday and a 30 percent chance on Saturday night.

Sunday’s morning low will be 70 degrees, with the high reaching 93 by Sunday afternoon.

Will it rain on the Fourth of July? Reith said there’s a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday morning. The National Weather Service puts the chance at 40 percent.

The temperature will be 71 to start out the holiday in the morning, climbing to a high of 90 by the late afternoon, with dry conditions during the day and into the evening, Reith said.
