Paul Ulasien, president and senior partner for DeafCat Music LLC and Business Continuity Consulting LLC, has been appointed to the Board of Advisors for Information Today Inc., of Pennsauken, N.J.

Ulasien is beginning a one-year term as adviser to the editorial and research departments of Faulkner Information Services, an Information Today publication, providing input on the journal’s coverage of business and technology issues.

DefCat Music is a Lawrence-based entertainment promotions and production company; Business Continuity Consulting, Lawrence, provides advice related to decision-making strategies, information technology, IT disaster survivability and biometrics security.

Loretta Cunningham received a plaque and a bonus for her fifth anniversary with A-1 Plumbing Heating & Cooling, Lawrence. Cunningham is a customer service representative.

Drs. Phillip Hart and Jessica Peterson have opened Lawrence Community Chiropractic at 901 Ky., Suite 102.

Hart, a lifelong Lawrence resident, and Peterson, who attended Kansas University, are focusing their clinic’s efforts on restoring balance to the body through chiropractic, acupuncture and nutrition. Both Hart and Peterson are trained in traditional Chinese acupuncture.

Jeffrey M. Johnson and Michael T. McCoy have joined the board of directors for Capitol Federal Financial, taking the place of retiring directors Robert B. Maupin and Carl W. Quarnstrom.

Johnson, president of Flint Hills National Golf Club in Wichita, is trustee for the Kansas University Endowment Association and is a 1988 business administration graduate of KU.

McCoy, orthopedic surgeon and chief of surgery at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka, graduated in 1975 from KU, where he received his undergraduate and medical degrees before moving on to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Maupin had been a board member for Cap Fed since 1975; Quarnstrom had served on the board since 1985.

Mary Taghavi has opened The Perfect Face, a skin-care salon in downtown Lawrence. It is upstairs from Hobbs at 700 Mass., Suite 207.

Taghavi performs microdermabrasions, a treatment for wrinkles and blemishes. Other services include aromatherapy massages, facials, chemical peels and waxing.

Taghavi comes to Lawrence from southern California, where she worked in a dermatologist’s office and served as an instructor for an esthetician program.

Kansas Board of Accountancy has announced that Glen Hewitt, Lawrence, passed the certified public accountant examination. He was one of 29 candidates, out of a total of 221, who successfully passed the computerized exam in the October/November 2004 window.

Barb King, director of outpatient services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, has been appointed 2005 membership chairwoman for the Kansas Organization of Nurse Leaders, an organization dedicated to providing and promoting leadership development and other related services for registered nurses. The organization also advocates excellence in service and improvement in the health status of Kansas residents.

King has 15 years of experience as a registered nurse. She started working at LMH in 1998 as a clinical coordinator in surgery. She previously worked as director of surgical services at Hays Medical Center in Hays.

Dave and Lisa Rueschhoff and Mike and Lisa Johnson have opened a sign company, Sign A Rama, at 3727 W. Sixth St., Suite D. Sign A Rama is a full-service sign company that offers computer-generated permanent and temporary sign products and services. Lisa Johnson serves as manager.

American Red Cross Board members from the Douglas County Chapter approved five new directors who joined the 13 seated directors Jan. 1. New directors, who are beginning three-year terms, are Kim Ens, of Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department; Mike Godard, assistant professor of physiology at Kansas University; Mark Heider, president of Commerce Bank; Jason Long, attorney with Stevens and Brand; and Lindsey Kennedy, of Lawrence High School.

Officers for 2005 are Cody Howard, chairman; Rich Lorenzo, vice chairman; Allen Belot, secretary; and Jackie Bunnell, treasurer.

A new business-to-business referral exchange group has formed in Lawrence. Douglas County Connection meets at 7 a.m. each Wednesday at Ron King American Family Insurance, 3010 Four Wheel Drive. Meetings typically attract about 18 members, each from a different industry. Group members discuss their businesses and have educational presentations. Guests are welcome. Dillon Stores Division announces the official retirement of Wilbert Townsend, effective Feb. 7, after 30 years of service with the company. Townsend finished his last day of work Jan. 3 at Dillons, 1015 W. 23rd in Lawrence.

Townsend started work for Dillons in 1974, as a grocery clerk at 27th and Iowa streets.

Kim Patton, young adult specialist at the Lawrence Public Library, has been appointed to the 2005-2006 Coretta Scott King Award Jury.

Patton, an employee of the library since 1990, also is a member of the Young Adult Library Service Assn.’s Quick Picks for Young Adults Committee, which chooses the best books for reluctant teen readers.

The Coretta Scott King Award is presented annually by the Coretta Scott King Task Force of the American Library Assn.’s Ethnic Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table. The jury meets each year at the association’s annual conference, and announces the award in January. The award honors African American authors and illustrators of outstanding books for children and young adults.

Honors and awards

The 2004 Kansas Getaway Guide received a Bronze Ozzie Award from Folio magazine for the Best Custom Supplement, Annual or One-Shot. The award was announced in November in New York during the Celebration of Excellence Awards Gala, part of a conference and exposition for the magazine industry.

The 2004 Kansas Getaway Guide was judged on overall design, appropriate design and recognizable or logical brand extension. The Ozzie Awards are open to all magazines and are given in recognition of excellence in magazine design.

Midwest Living magazine’s Special Publications Division produced the 2004 Kansas Getaway Guide. The guide featured stories, photographs and design similar to that found in the pages of Midwest Living.

The National Science Foundation is sponsoring the Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer Conference March 7-10 in Omaha, Neb. The conference is for business owners who are interested in obtaining a government grant or contract and successfully developing their technology.
