Cyclones’ ‘best game’ stuffs No. 13 Sooners

Iowa State stuns Oklahoma, 74-66; Kansas State secures sweep of Missouri

? Wayne Morgan’s stoic demeanor disguised how he truly felt.

The Iowa State coach walked off the court as calmly as if he were going to the supermarket, but he was beaming inside after his team beat No. 13 Oklahoma, 74-66, Saturday to break a six-game losing streak.

“I was elated for my guys. I was happy to see them play the way we knew that they could play,” Morgan said. “It wasn’t like no emotion. That was me floating.”

Curtis Stinson scored 23 points, and Iowa State relied exclusively on its short-range game to win for the first time in the Big 12 and end Oklahoma’s 10-game winning streak.

Energized by a near-sellout crowd, Iowa State (9-8, 1-5 Big 12 Conference) looked nothing like the team that practically had sleepwalked through an overtime loss to Colorado in its previous home game. The Cyclones got the ball inside to center Jared Homan, scored consistently in transition and kept Oklahoma (16-3, 5-1) in check with a 2-3 zone.

“I think this game honestly was our best game in which everybody contributed,” Homan said. “We didn’t have one guy come in the game that didn’t contribute somehow, some way. That’s a big factor for us. We’ve got a lot of guys out. We just need everybody to contribute in every way they can.”

Iowa State is down to a seven-player rotation and six of them scored at least seven points. Homan finished with 14, Will Blalock scored 11 to go with five assists and three steals, and freshman Rahshon Clark added 10 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

Last in the league in three-point shooting, Iowa State did not make a basket from outside 10 feet and outscored the Sooners 48-28 in the paint.

“We haven’t been shooting threes very well, so my guys said, ‘Coach, we’ve got to get a little closer,”‘ Morgan said with a smile.

Iowa State's Damion Staple goes up for a shot between Oklahoma's Taj Gray, left, and Jaison Williams during the second half. The Cyclones upended the 13th-ranked Sooners, 74-66, Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Taj Gray led Oklahoma with 21 points, and Lawrence McKenzie scored 15, all on five second-half three-pointers. Kevin Bookout added 12 points and 12 rebounds but was limited to eight shots. He had been averaging 19.8 points in conference play.

“They packed it in, but we’ve seen it at Baylor and we’ve seen it at home versus Texas,” Bookout said. “We should have played better than that against a zone. It’s not like it’s our first time, but it looked like it today.”

Oklahoma had not lost since falling to No. 2 Duke, 78-67, on Dec. 18 and was off to its best start in league play in 16 years.

Kansas State 64, Missouri 53

Columbia, Mo. — Jeremiah Massey scored 17 points, and Kansas State overcame a 19-0 Missouri run to complete a season sweep of the Tigers.

Fred Peete added 16 points, and Lance Harris had 14 for the Wildcats (13-4, 3-3 Big 12). Jimmy McKinney had 14 points for Missouri (10-10, 2-5), which lost for the fifth time in six games. The win was the first for Kansas State in Columbia since 1985.

Just as in a 74-54 loss at Kansas State on Jan. 15, Missouri was eager to shoot the three, no matter how unsuccessful. The Tigers were 5-for-26 from three-point range two weeks ago and 5-for-29 on Saturday.

Missouri coach Quin Snyder shook up the lineup, perhaps sending a message after mostly lackluster play during a 1-4 stretch entering the game. Leading scorer and rebounder Linas Kleiza was replaced by Marshall Brown and didn’t appear until nearly six minutes into the game. Guard Jason Horton was replaced by freshman Glen Dandridge.

The Tigers ranked 11th in the Big 12 with a .363 three-point percentage entering the game.

Meanwhile, Kansas State ranked fifth nationally in three-point shooting, averaging 41.6 percent, and the Wildcats were 7-for-13.

Texas A&M 74, Baylor 62

College Station, Texas — Acie Law scored 22 points, including 11 in the last 61/2 minutes, and freshman Joseph Jones added 21 as Texas A&M held off Baylor. The win gives the Aggies (14-4, 3-4 Big 12) a school-record 13 home wins this season. Bobby Leach added 14 and Antoine Wright had 11 points for Texas A&M. Baylor (9-8, 1-5) was led by Aaron Bruce who scored 27 points, including four three-pointers. Baylor has now lost three straight and four of its last five games.

Texas Tech 84, Nebraska 68

Lubbock, Texas — Martin Zeno scored a career-high 22 points as Texas Tech beat Nebraska. Both teams had four players in double figures. Jarrius Jackson scored 18, Devonne Giles had 14, and Ronald Ross had 11 for Tech (12-5, 4-2 Big 12). Ross was 3-of-8 from the field after shooting 68 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the field in the past seven games. Dourisseau and McCray each scored 12 points, while Jake Muhleisen and Marcus Neal each added 11 for the Cornhuskers (9-8, 3-4).
