Snow moving in this evening

You might want to work sledding into your weekend plans — Lawrence could get anywhere between a trace of snow and two inches of the white stuff by early Saturday morning, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“We have some snow in your forecast today, but not until late this afternoon,” Schack said.

The National Weather Service has placed almost all of Kansas, including Douglas County, under a Winter Weather Advisory through midnight, as bands of snow, sleet and freezing drizzle move east across the state.

There were a few flakes flying around the city in the late afternoon.

But the strongest bands of snow aren’t expected until later in the evening, when heavy wet flakes will fall, accumulating mostly on the grass, cars and porches, she said. Roads, bridges and overpasses could become slick in spots, according to the National Weather Service. One to 3 inches of snow is expected through north central, northeast and east central Kansas.

Lawrence’s temperature at 5 p.m. was 36 degrees, with a southeast 7-mph wind making the wind chill 30.

Overnight, as the snow moves in, the temperature will drop to 27 by Saturday morning. Saturday’s high temperature will be 36. The National Weather Service is predicting a light chance of snow, mixed with rain Saturday afternoon and a chance of drizzle or freezing drizzle Saturday night.

The temperature will fall to a low of 30 by Sunday morning. Sunday’s high will be 37, with another chance for rain and snow on Sunday night into Monday morning.
