William Allen White award recipient named

A Kansas University graduate who is the Wall Street Journal’s Washington, D.C., bureau chief is this year’s winner of the national citation presented by the William Allen White Foundation, named for the Kansas journalist who was editor of The Emporia Gazette.

Gerald F. Seib, a 1978 KU graduate, will receive the award and deliver a speech at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 11 in Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. He also will meet with faculty and students during his trip to Lawrence.

Seib, who has held his position since 2002, periodically writes the paper’s “Capital Journal” column, and was part of the team that won a Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He is a regular commentator on Washington affairs for CNBC.

The speech is free and open to the public.

Police

New noise policy leads to 3 citations

Lawrence Police cited three people for loud parties between Thursday and Friday, after the department unveiled a new policy designed to get tough on noise complaints.

Officers responded to 24 noise complaints between Thursday and Friday. The three who were cited received notices to appear in municipal court.

In recent months, police rarely issued noise citations, in part because their policy required upset neighbors to give formal statements to police if they wanted to press charges.

Last week the department said it would allow officers to cite people for noise disturbances without having a complaining witness and would no longer require officers to write a full report from the incident.
