The Pelathe District Volunteer Recognition Dinner was Jan. 15 at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. Frank Wright was emcee. Brick Huffman, director of field services for the Heart of America Council, spoke about the relevance of Boy Scouts today.

Sam Gleeson, Cory Judson, Brian Workman and Malcolm Miller participated in the opening flag ceremony, Pledge of Allegiance and Scout Oath and Law. The invocation was given by David Berkowitz.

Bill Berkowitz installed the district officers: John Scarffe, chairman; Tom Sheely, vice chairman; and John Scott, commissioner.

Other volunteers who received special recognition were: Rod Zinn, Nicole Bennett, Jim Henry, Barry Frank, Chris Armstrong, Joe King, Ralph Clement, Ralena McCurdy, Casey Jones, Jim Peterson, Curtis Barnhill, Danny Keller, Frank Wright, Clay Kappelman and Annelee Marsh.

The following members of the District Committee also received special recognition: John Scarffe, Tom Sheely, Mike McCurdy, Keith Wood, Rich Bailey, Glen Sharp, David Berkowitz, Frank Wright, Allen Wiechert, Pat Donahue, Joe King and Curtis Neal Harris, outgoing district executive.

Mason McCurdy was recognized for receiving Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow. Tom Sheely was honored for his advancement to Keeper of the Wampum in Mic-O-Say. Dan Sheely and Jim Peterson were recognized for achieving Sachem in Mic-O-Say.

A brief memorial was given for the late John Saunders, who was a Scout leader in Douglas County.

Tom Sheely was recognized for having won the National Football League’s Community Quarterback award for his service at Rotary Camp, a camp for youths with special needs. Rod Zinn and Mark Gleeson were presented the District Award of Merit, the highest award given at the district level.

Cub Scout Pack 3057, chartered to the Lawrence Catholic School PTO, had a pack meeting in November, when Luke Fitzgerald received his Bobcat badge. The pack was treated to a “Mad Science” program Dec. 7. Noah Malsbury received a recruiter patch. Jack Lange received his Webelo colors and several activity pins and belt loops. The two Tiger Dens participated in a service project Dec. 11. They raked leaves for Evelyn Brown, a senior member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church parish. Those who participated were: Tegan Bowers, Michael DeGrassi, Thomas Bach, Noah Malsbury, K.J. Lashley and Trevor Munsch.

First-year Webelos had a meeting Dec. 18 to work on their Scientist Activity Pins. Scouts attending were Franklin Brou, Jack Lange, Kolbe Murray and Nathan Shobe. Den leaders and parents assisting were Don and Ellen Shobe, Michael Murray and Michael Lange.

Joshua Ostermann, a member of Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to the First Presbyterian Church of Lawrence, is living the next seven months in Germany, where his father is working at the University of Stuttgart. Ostermann hopes to be able to attend a Camporee at Normandy Beach this summer, as well as hook up with other Scouting activities in Europe.

The Lawrence Duplicate Bridge Club met Monday. Twelve tables participated in a stratified game following a Mitchell movement. Virginia Seaver directed the play.

Playing the North-South cards, Lawrence Bodle and Kent McCullough claimed first place in A. Bill Hamilton and Barb Hamilton placed second in A and first in B and C. Chris Lane and Shirley Reese placed third in A and second in B. Steve Phelps and Clyde Romer were fourth in A and third in B. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd were fifth in A and fourth in B. Betty Spalsbury and Bob Anderson took second in C.

Sitting East-West, Dave Piro and Donna Johnson finished first in A. Jim Kelley and John Hickey were second in A. Lois Jones and Jeff Nash were third in A. Virginia Seaver and Paul Heitzman took fourth in A. Terry Tolar and Harry Shaffer finished fifth in A. Russ LaForce and Wade Rush were first in B and C. Don Daugherty and Harry Talley placed second in B and C.

Bill Hamilton and Frances Vogel placed third in A and first in B and C. Eldon Herd and Glenna Herd were third in B. Bobbie McCorkle and Ginny Johnston were second in C.

Competing East-West, Bob Anderson and Don Brennaman claimed first place in A, B and C. Klee Zaricky and Shirley Reese were second in A and B.
