Bulldogs: Don’t hot-dog us

BHS fired up during blowout loss to K.C. Lincoln

? Lincoln Prep’s romp through the bracket at the Baldwin Invitational Tournament claimed a second victim Friday night.

This time, Baldwin High took the boys basketball pounding from the Kansas City, Mo., school, 85-41.

Baldwin's Sam Scott, left, goes up for a shot of Kansas City (Mo.) Lincoln's Greg Smith. The Bulldogs lost, 85-41, Friday in Baldwin.

The Bulldogs were exposed in every facet of the game, but they did take home one moral victory: pride.

Baldwin coach Heath Cooper called a full timeout with :20.2 remaining and his team trailing, 84-41. The timeout came after a three-minute display of showboating and cherry-picking put on by the Tigers, which included an alley-oop dunk resulting in Lincoln’s Lawrence Johnson swinging on the rim.

The timeout fired up Baldwin’s seniors, who had spent the majority of the second half on the bench.

“Our team … we take a lot in terms of sportsmanship onto the court,” Baldwin guard Aaron Hannon said. “We just don’t like how they come to our home court and start showing off.”

The Tigers earned the right, however, to play a little lackadaisically.

They jumped to an immediate 10-0 lead after deep three-pointers by Dominique Johnson and Brandon Coleman. The Bulldogs never stood much of a chance offensively, as their unselfishness on offense hurt them against a team that applied full-court pressure the entire 32 minutes.

“In our offense, we want to have a lot of dribble penetration, and we were just passing too much,” Cooper said. “You can print this, too, I don’t care. I just think when you’re up 40 points, and you’ve got your starters in with three or four minutes left, and you’re still pressing with a half-court trap, I just think that’s very unsportsmanlike.”

Baldwin will face K.C. Turner today in the third-place game.

“It should be pretty easy (to bounce back),” Hannon said. “We have to just come out and play and get our reputation back.”
