Temperatures to take an arctic plunge

Get ready for a quick drop in temperatures tonight through the weekend. “We’re on quite a rollercoaster,” says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

Following Thursday’s highs in the upper 50s, Lawrence will see temperatures climb today only into the upper 30s. Then a strong wind from Canada, called an Alberta Clipper, will move in tonight, dropping temperatures to single digits by Sunday morning before climbing back into the upper 40s next week, Schack said.

“It will be a double dose of cold air and strong winds, ” she said. “We’re in for an arctic blast for the next 24 hours.”

At 8:45 a.m. today, the temperature in Lawrence was 32, with an easterly 7-mph wind making the wind chill 25. The humidity level was 100 percent, creating foggy conditions. Visibility was less than a quarter of a mile in some areas, Schack said.

“Get the coat back out, we’re heading only into the upper 30s this afternoon,” she said. The high will reach 38, with winds 10 to 18 mph keeping wind chills in the 20s, Schack said.

Then, even colder air moves in. Tonight’s temperature will fall to a low of 25 by early Saturday morning, with the wind chill around zero.

“We will actually see our temperatures falling throughout the day Saturday,” Schack said.

Saturday’s temperatures will drop from 25 at about 7 a.m. to 16 by 4 p.m., with northerly to northwesterly winds 20 to 30 mph, gusting to 40 mph. Wind chills will be around zero in the morning, falling to below zero in the afternoon, she said.

Sunday’s morning low will be 6 degrees, with Sunday’s high climbing to 29.

Then warmer weather returns Monday, with the low starting at 13, climbing to a high of 43 by Monday afternoon. Tuesday’s high will be 47.
