Dana Bruce Hanford, Bainbridge Island, Wash.

He was born Jan. 1, 1929, in Scranton, Pa., the son of Reginald and Anna Hoeflich Hanford. He attended schools in Reading, Pa., and graduated from high school in 1945. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a medical technician at Walter Reed Hospital.

Mr. Hanford earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. He received his master’s degree and Ph.D. in psychology from Kansas University in 1955 and 1958. While at KU he worked as a clinical psychologist for the Veterans Administration and a psychology instructor.

He moved in 1961 to Anacortes, where he worked in the hospital’s psychiatric units. He moved to Bainbridge Island in 1965. He helped design a community mental health program for three counties and in 1970 founded the Olympic Mental Health Associates. From 1970 to 1997 he was a consultant for the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.

He married Frances “Frannie” Mason in 1953. She died in 2001. He married Elizabeth McLean Petras in 2004. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Dana Jr. and Robert, both of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Caitlin, Toronto; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
