Free State’s Portela wins two at Mo-Kan

? Free State’s Anthony Portela won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200 individual medley Saturday at the Mo-Kan Invitational.

Portela finished more than three seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the 200 IM, winning in 1:56.87. He finished the 100 butterfly in 52.29.

FSHS finished sixth in the 19-team meet, which drew teams from four states.

Free State’s Nathan Schriner was second in the 100 breaststroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle. Chris Sellon was fifth in the 200 freestyle and eighth in the 500 free. Chase Torgeson also had a pair of top-10 finishes, placing fourth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 200 IM.

Nick Leet was the top placer for Lawrence High, finishing fourth in a diving competition that included the top five competitors in Kansas.

Lawrence’s Zach Henderson earned a state-qualifying time of 5:19.79 in the 500 freestyle. He finished 17th.

LHS finished 16th in the team standings.

“It was a big meet, and there were a lot of fast teams from around the region,” LHS coach Ryan Adams said. “It was fun to see a lot of fast swimmers. For a lot of the guys, it was their first big meet.”
