Johnnie A. Young
Services for Johnnie A. Young, 45, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Ms. Young died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 3, 1959, in Pawhuska, Okla., the daughter of John G. and Clara Ann Willison Young. She had lived in Lawrence since 1965, and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1977. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Haskell Indian Nations University in 2000 and a master’s degree in indigenous studies from Kansas University in 2004.
She worked as an archivist at the Culture Center at Haskell Indian Nations University and at the Anthropology Museum at Kansas University. She also worked in admissions and records and in the minority affairs department at KU.
She was a member of the Citizen-Potawatomi Nation and Seneca-Cayuga Tribe, both in Oklahoma. She was also a member of the American Indian Movement and served on the Wetlands Preservation Committee in Lawrence.
She married Walt Fields in July 1994. He survives.
Other survivors include her parents; a daughter, Kylah Ann, Lawrence; a brother, Jimmie Dean Sandusky, Terlton, Okla.; two sisters, Jo Ellen Young, Pawhuska, Okla., and Julia K. Simpson, Lawrence.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, Children’s Diabetes Assn., or American Cancer Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
