Area prepares for freezing weather

Freezing drizzle fell on the Lawrence area for the second night in a row Tuesday, making some roads and streets slick and forcing at least three area school district to cancel classes today.

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday officials with the McLouth, Perry-Lecompton and Santa Fe Trail districts had announced that there would be no school today. McLouth and Perry-Lecompton were closing for the second day in a row.

Although area law enforcement agencies were reporting many slick roads, dispatchers said there had been few traffic accidents reported and none was serious.

In Lawrence, city street workers were out in force Tuesday night sanding and salting streets.

Douglas County and surrounding counties are in a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. today. Freezing drizzle was expected to intensify and become freezing rain by this morning. Fog also was expected to become dense in some areas, according to the National Weather Service.

The worst of this winter storm was going to affect north-central Kansas, the weather service said.

Today’s high temperature was expected to be in the 40s with the possibility of thunderstorms in the afternoon.

By Friday and through the weekend there will be a chance for snow and low temperatures.
