Woodling: Indeed, crowd was loud

Notes and quotes while wondering if any mothballs will fall out of Kansas University’s men’s basketball blue road uniforms at Kentucky. …

How loud was it during Saturday’s Kansas-Georgia Tech basketball game in Allen Fieldhouse? A decibel meter brought by Jonathan Kealing, a reporter for the University Daily Kansan, registered a high of 119.9. According to OSHA, 120 is the typical reading for a basketball crowd. Other noises at that level are a thunder clap, a jackhammer and amplified rock music. …

Long-in-the-tooth Kansas University football fans may remember that Terry Donahue, fired the other day as general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, was hired by Pepper Rodgers out of UCLA in 1967 to be the Jayhawks’ defensive line coach and later became UCLA’s head coach. His wife, Andrea, is from Overland Park. …

Will Ohio State try to hire KU’s Lew Perkins as its new athletic director now that Andy Geiger has retired? If the Buckeyes’ hierarchy does try to lure Perkins to Columbus, Ohio, they’ll have to up the ante because Geiger’s base salary was $250,000 and Perkins’ base pay is $420,000. …

Incidentally, Perkins, who already has four administrative assistants assigned to him and his senior staff, is advertising for another. According to the department Web site, Perkins is looking for an executive liaison. The new staffer’s duties, according to the Web site, will be “coordinating public and official appearances, maintaining accurate calendars for meetings and appearances, e-mail and correspondence, and attending public appearances with the athletic director.” …

Reader Rex Buchanan wonders, in the wake of KU’s 70-68 overtime win over Georgia Tech, how many times the Jayhawks have won a basketball game they never led during regulation. That’s a statistic almost impossible to research, but one thing is certain. It hasn’t happened very often. …

Keith Wooden, a former Free State High basketball standout now at Arizona State, hasn’t been playing much for the Sun Devils this season. The 6-foot-9 sophomore is averaging about eight minutes a game off the bench, and only 2.0 points and 0.7 rebounds per game. Wooden started nine games as freshman last year. …

KU officials are charging a premium $15, instead of the usual $6, for a ticket to Saturday night’s Kansas-Kansas State women’s basketball game in Allen Fieldhouse. And why not? Eight of KU’s 14 largest women’s home crowds have occurred with K-State as the opponent. …

KU chancellor Robert Hemenway’s two-year stint as chair of the NCAA’s powerful Division One board of directors will come to an end during this weekend’s NCAA Convention in Dallas. Hemenway played a large role in implementing legislation that has helped the NCAA maintain the difficult balance between academics and sports entertainment. …

Culled from the NCAA Convention schedule: “9 a.m. to 5 p.m. NCAA Sports Wagering Information Booth.” In spite of the title, it goes without saying no one working the booth will supply directions to the nearest sports book. …

Perhaps the most amazing aspect of KU’s exciting 65-60 triumph over Texas A&M Wednesday night wasn’t the Jayhawks’ stretch run but the number of people in Allen Fieldhouse. Even though students are on break and the icy, frigid weather wasn’t conducive to travel, I’d estimate nearly 15,000 were on hand in the 16,300-seat arena. …

Marian Washington, now in retirement after coaching KU’s women’s basketball team for 31 years, has declined interview requests, but friends report she is feeling better than she did nearly a year ago when she stepped down for health reasons. Washington hasn’t attended any home games, but they say she watches Sunflower Broadband’s live telecasts. …

Tennessee Titans center Justin Hartwig, one of the few former Kansas University football players starting in the NFL, took a beating in his third pro season. Hartwig had surgery on a ring finger a month ago, underwent shoulder surgery this week and will have an ankle operation later this month.
