Tafanelli replacement selection delayed

Selecting a replacement for Lee Tafanelli as the representative for the 47th District in the Kansas House will have to wait a few days.

Jefferson County Republicans were slated to make the decision Tuesday night, but the meeting was canceled because of weather, said Travis Oliver, chairman of Jefferson County Republicans.

Oliver said the decision would be made at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fairview Township Fire Department. Fairview Township is south of Ozawkie.

Tafanelli resigned his position as representative of the 47th District, which includes all of Jefferson County and part of Atchison County, in late December because he has been deployed to Iraq, not to return for a year.

Tafanelli has said he would like to see Joann Flower, who represented the area until retiring in 2000, take over the house seat.

Hearings postponed in robbery cases

Icy weather was one reason a court hearing was delayed Tuesday for a group of men charged in two December armed robberies.

Defendants Antonio C. Broom, 18, Darius P. Trammell, 21, Gregory A. Nixon Jr., 21, and Terry Moore Jr., 22, were due in District Court for a preliminary hearing. But it was postponed until Tuesday, in part because some witnesses couldn’t make it to Lawrence because of bad weather.

The men are charged in connection with an armed robbery Dec. 1 in the parking lot of the Malls Olde English Village apartments, 2411 La., and an armed home-invasion robbery Dec. 7 in the 1000 block of Mississippi Street.

Nixon and Broom are charged in both robberies. Moore and Trammell are charged only in the Dec. 7 robbery.

Trammell is free on bond. The others remained in the Douglas County Jail on Tuesday.
