Futures Tour confirms city stop

A tournament in Lawrence on May 6-8 is included on the 2005 schedule of the LPGA Futures Golf Tour announced Tuesday.

The Lawrence Futures Classic at Eagle Bend Golf Course is one of three new stops on the tour. The other first-time sites will be McAllen, Texas, and Kankakee, Ill.

Lawrence replaces Wichita, which played host to an event the last four years.

Futures Tour officials confirmed Lawrence as a site early last month, but didn’t make it official until Tuesday. Lawrence tourney organizers still are working on funding.

“We have two or three potential major sponsors,” said Miles Schnaer, who helped bring the three-day meet Lawrence, “and we’re working internally to put together an organizational structure.”

Schnaer said he had heard from many people eager to volunteer.

“The day after the story came out,” Schnaer said, “I had four people call and say, ‘Let me know what I can do to help you.'”

The Tour schedule will feature 18 tournaments in 13 states. Competition will begin in early March in Lakeland, Fla.
