Chester ‘Chet’ Arthur Wilks Sr.

Services for Chester “Chet” Arthur Wilks Sr., 86, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post 14.

Mr. Wilks died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Caruthersville, Mo., the son of William Henry and Cora Ethel Anderson Wilks. He was a longtime Lawrence resident.

Mr. Wilks served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852. He worked for Kaw Motors in Lawrence until 1968, when he became disabled from a work-related injury. He formerly worked for Sunflower Munitions Plant in DeSoto.

He married Mary Jane Henninger on July 14, 1945, in Wichita. She died Aug. 26, 1994.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Ackley and Judy Akins (King), both of Lawrence; six sons, Henry E. Sr., Roger L. and John W., all of Lawrence, James M., Ozawkie, Loubie A. Sr., Eudora, and Michael A., Oskaloosa; 33 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.

A son, Chester A. Jr., and two grandchildren died earlier.

The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to Lawrence Humane Society, sent in care of the mortuary.
