De Soto’s Erisman in final

? De Soto High junior Neil Erisman’s career record is pretty close to perfect.

But two of his three losses have come at the Kansas Coliseum, a fact that has kept Erisman from a state championship.

The Wildcat standout doesn’t seem to think he’ll suffer another state setback today when he takes on Colby’s Nick Zahm in the 152-pound final.

“I’m really confident right now. I know what I have to do to get the job done,” said Erisman, who pinned two of his opponents Friday and scored a major decision on the other one.

“I think last year I was too uptight when things got close,” said Erisman, whose perfect record this season grew to 41-0. “I mean, if you’re not nervous when you come to the state tournament something’s wrong with you, but I think I let it affect me too much.”

The most exciting area matchup will be between Tonganoxie’s Ross Starcher and Santa Fe Trail’s Justin Wiscombe, who will meet for the fourth time this year in the 171-pound final.

“I’m on the top of the world right now,” Starcher said. “All I wanted when I came here was to medal and have a rematch with Justin.”

Wiscombe, who fell in last year’s final by a point, said he was confident, but not cocky, when it came to seeing a familiar face.

“He’s real tough,” Wiscombe said. “But I feel like I can beat him, and hopefully I’ll save one more match for him.”

One more match is all Mill Valley junior Justin Broadbent needs to win to become Class 5A’s 112-pound winner. He advanced to the championship match with a 2-0 decision over Great Bend’s Chris Boultinghouse.

Despite being pinned in his championship semifinal Baldwin’s Kevin Callahan had a solid day, going 2-3 in his first state tournament.
