Washburn University senior Andrew Skea, of Lawrence, was one of seven students and one administrator inducted into the Washburn University chapter of National Order of Omega on Feb. 3. The Order of Omega serves to recognize fraternity and sorority members for their service to the Washburn Greek community and the university. Only the top 3 percent of all fraternity and sorority members at Washburn are selected to join. Skea is a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

A reception celebrating the 80th birthday of Iona Spencer, Lecompton, will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 5 at the Stull Church of Christ. Spencer was born March 8, 1925, in Watson. Her children are Rod and Jeanette Spencer, Lecompton; Roger and Joyce Spencer, Alta Vista; and Gail and Steve Day, Topeka. She has six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Thomas Reams, Southwest Junior High School student, took first place in the K-12 section at the Prairie View High School chess tournament Feb. 19 in La Cygne. Kenny Blevins, Wakarusa Valley student, took first place in the K-8 section of the tournament. Other medal winners from Lawrence were Roy Wedge, Central Junior High, 20th, K-12; Jessica Newman, South Junior High School, 11th, K-8; and Robert Newman, Wakarusa Valley, 13th, K-5 section.
