Tongie’s Starcher wants medal

? Tonganoxie senior Ross Starcher wasn’t really looking for luck last weekend at his Class 4A wrestling regional in Fort Scott, but he certainly wasn’t about to pass up the charm Chieftain coach Jeremy Goebel offered.

“Coach kind of mentioned he had a couple of old singlets and wondered if us seniors wanted to wear them for luck,” Starcher said. “We all said ‘all right’, and then none of us lost a match.”

While the “old-school” singlets from the late 1970s-early ’80s might have brought Starcher and senior teammates Hunter Samuels (130 pounds) and Garrett Palmer (145) a little good karma, the 171-pound Starcher said it would take more than superstition for him to bring home his first state medal.

“This is my last shot, so I have to leave it all on the mat,” said Starcher, who, despite compiling a career record of 140-25, never has medaled in three years at state.

“I guess I’ve been kind of nervous and wound up with a couple of bad days down there, but I’m pretty pumped to have one more shot,” he said.

To win the 171-pound crown, Starcher (35-4) would have to get past Santa Fe Trail senior Justin Wiscombe.

Wiscombe, the defending runner-up, is a perfect 37-0 and has handed Starcher three of his four setbacks.

Both Santa Fe Trail and Baldwin could make a run at the 4A team title.

Five of the Chargers’ 10 qualifiers have won 30 or more matches this season, while the Bulldogs’ seven qualifiers are just one off the school record.

Bulldogs freshman Kevin Callahan won regionals at 119 pounds and improved to 42-4 on the season.

De Soto’s Neil Erisman probably will be the guy to beat at 152 pounds.

The Wildcat junior lost only three matches his first two years in high school, but two of those setbacks carry plenty of motivation because they cost him state titles. So far this season, Erisman sports a perfect 38-0 record.

Oskaloosa 125-pound senior Jeff Peterson and Wellsville 119-pound junior Ray Ramirez will participate in the Class 3-2-1A tourney being held in Hays.
