Grace Russell, Topeka

Private family services for Grace Russell, 97, Topeka, have been arranged with Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel in Topeka.

Mrs. Russell died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Brewster Retirement Center in Topeka.

She was born July 19, 1907, in Hoisington, the daughter of Jasper S. and Mae Alice Woodburn Vaniman. She attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from Kansas University in 1929, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

Mrs. Russell was a member of First United Methodist Church in Topeka. She served as a board member for Engleside Rest Home, Mulvane Art Center, the Cancer Foundation, Topeka Symphony and a local Girl Scout Council. She was also a member of the Junior League of Topeka and donated a conservation easement to Kansas Land Trust in Osage County.

She married Robert E. Russell Sr. on Oct. 16, 1930. He died Sept. 5, 1986.

Survivors include a daughter, Betsy R. Broda, Ardsley-on-Hudson, N.Y.; a son, Robert E. Russell Jr., Lawrence; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
