Eugene T. ‘Gene’ Comeau, Lawrence

Services for Eugene T. “Gene” Comeau, 77, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery

Mr. Comeau died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at his home.

He was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Kenmore, N.Y., the son of Stephen L. and Mabel Edna White Comeau. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1950.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 at Camp Detrick, Md., and in an engineering and scientific unit, where he studied the development of biological warfare. He worked for Monsanto Chemical Company from 1952 to 1970. He also was an engineer at Farmland Industries and retired May 1, 1998.

Mr. Comeau was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for his entire career, and he received industry recognition for founding an international organization for the study of ammonium nitrate pollution control. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, where he served as chairman of the grounds committee for five years. He also was a member of Lawrence Country Club.

He married Mary Ellen Horton on April 16, 1955, in El Dorado, Ark. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include three daughters, Catherine “Kiki” Cohlmia, Wichita, Rebecca Carter, Houston, and Jennifer Reichlin, Watkinsville, Ga.; two sons, Stephen, Wichita, and John, New York City; two sisters, Nancy Cangelosi and Shirley Dolan, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday after a rosary is said at 7 p.m. at Warren-McElwain Mortuary.

The family suggests memorials to the church, Hospice Care of Douglas County or the Christian Foundation for Children and Adults, sent in care of the mortuary.
