Eudora shackles Baldwin

Press powers Cardinal girls; Kaup lifts EHS boys

? Cara Kimberlin didn’t give her seniors a speech before her team’s final home game of the season Tuesday night against Baldwin High, but the Eudora girls basketball coach did pull Kayla Moyer aside in the game’s waning minutes.

“She told me to take over, because this could be my last two minutes on our home court,” Moyer said. “I just thought about it, and I didn’t want to lose my last game.”

Moyer and the Cardinals made sure that didn’t happen, as Eudora edged Baldwin, 42-39.

Down 24-10 at halftime, Eudora used a trapping press to muddle the Bulldogs backcourt. The Cardinals (8-11) went on a 12-0 run to open the third quarter.

“You’re down 14, what are you going to do? They’re just going to run time off the clock,” Kimberlin said of her decision to apply a press.

The Bulldogs (8-11) committed nine turnovers in the third quarter Eudora made getting the ball up court a monumental task.

“We gave up the game in the first two minutes of the third quarter,” Baldwin coach Eric Toot said. “We didn’t come out focused. … You have to give (the Cardinals) credit. They deserved the win.”

Eudora junior Emily Gloshen only posted two points but snagged the final defensive rebound after Baldwin’s Denise Orloff missed a pair of free throws with 13.7 seconds left. Gloshen, who just had been inserted into the game, was fouled instantly and swished two free throws to cement the victory.

“None of us got down,” said Moyer, who was one of four Cardinals to finish with six points. “We just knew we had to keep our intensity, and we did it.”

Junior Erin Kracl had a team-high nine points for Eudora.

Eudora High junior Michelle Deluna, left, drives past Baldwin's Kelsey Verhaeghe. The Cardinals beat the Bulldogs, 42-39, Tuesday in Eudora.

Ellie Meinen led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

Baldwin and Eudora each will end the regular season Friday before Class 4A sub-state begins next week. Eudora will travel to De Soto, and Baldwin will play host to Wellsville.

Fittingly, EHS senior forward Joe Kaup picked his final home-court appearance to have his most complete game. The Bulldogs had no solution to shackle Kaup, who poured in 27 points and added nine rebounds.

“He just has to be able to do that, because we don’t have an inside presence,” Eudora coach Scott Stein said. “It helped us tremendously inside because he was creating problems for them.”

After a dormant first half in which Baldwin tallied just 11 points, the Cardinals took a 14-point lead at the half.

The Bulldogs (6-13) tried to rally by scoring 29 points in the fourth quarter, but they never could stop the Cardinals (7-12), who kept knocking down crucial free-throws.

“You cannot turn intensity on and off. It has to be full force,” BHS coach Heath Cooper said of his team’s first-half sleepwalk. “Four quarters — I think we’ve only done it one time this year.”

Jeremy Wright had a team-high 11 points for Baldwin, which will play host Friday to Wellsville. Eudora will travel Friday to De Soto.
