Carter flops against former team

Rose leads Raptors to 100-82 victory over Nets

? The last thing Vince Carter needed to see in his first game against his former team was a well-rested Jalen Rose.

Carter struggled in his first game against the team that traded him to New Jersey earlier this season, missing 17 of 25 shots while being outplayed by Rose in the Toronto Raptors’ 100-82 victory over the Nets on Tuesday night.

Rose shot 12-for-15, scored 30 points and did a fine defensive job on Carter, who seemed to be pressing in a game he acknowledged meant a lot to him. Rose led the Raptors on a 14-4 run early in the fourth quarter, and New Jersey never recovered.

“He probably was a little tired from All-Star weekend. While he was running up and down the court throwing it off the backboard, I was laying on the beach drinking a fruity drink with an umbrella,” Rose said.

Chris Bosh had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Milt Palacio added 13 points for Toronto, which had six players in double figures. Carter scored 22 points, and Jason Kidd added 20 for the Nets, who had no one else in double figures.

Carter seemed loose before the game as he discussed last weekend’s slam-dunk contest won by Josh Smith of Atlanta. Carter said he had a dunk in his repertoire that no one had seen yet, a specialty he plans to keep under wraps until the next time he enters the dunk contest. But once the game began, Carter missed several drives, was off-target with his jumper, committed four turnovers and missed four free throws.

“It’s disappointing, the way we played. I think we’ve played better,” Carter said. “It’s always a concern coming out of the All-Star break how your team makes its comeback after the break.”

Bulls 105, Heat 101, OT

Chicago — Ben Gordon hit five three-pointers in the fourth quarter and overtime and scored 29 points, leading Chicago over Miami, which lost Shaquille O’Neal to a knee injury.

New Jersey's Vince Carter, left, looks to pass the ball as he is guarded by Toronto's Eric Williams. The Raptors defeated the Nets, 100-82, Tuesday night in East Rutherford, N.J.

O’Neal strained his left knee in the opening minutes after he went up for an alley-oop pass from Dwyane Wade and fell on Chicago’s Othella Harrington.

Sonics 87, Rockets 85

Houston — Ray Allen scored 29 points, capped by two free throws with 16.7 seconds left, to help Seattle snap Houston’s eight-game winning streak. Houston had a chance to tie it with five seconds left, but Scott Padgett’s three-point attempt was short, and Allen came up with the rebound. Houston led throughout the game before a dunk by Allen with 38 seconds left put Seattle ahead, 85-84.

Kings 114, Hawks 104

Sacramento, Calif. — Chris Webber scored 30 points, Mike Bibby had 23, and Sacramento beat Atlanta for just its second victory in eight games. Brad Miller had 16 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for the Kings.

Pistons 97, Knicks 88

Auburn Hills, Mich. — Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince each scored 19 points, helping Detroit earn its fifth straight victory and 10th in 11 games. Jamal Crawford had 23 points for the Knicks, who fell to 5-20 in 2005. The flu kept Larry Brown from coaching the Pistons.

Lakers 104, Celtics 95

Los Angeles — Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom each scored 21 points, Chris Mihm had 19 points and 15 rebounds, and Los Angeles beat Boston. It was the first meeting between the teams since the Lakers traded Gary Payton to the Celtics on Aug. 6 for Mihm, Chucky Atkins and Jumaine Jones. Rick Fox also went to Boston in the deal, but retired.

Pacers 108, Magic 84

Orlando, Fla. — Jermaine O’Neal scored 20 points in 22 minutes, helping Indiana. Fred Jones scored 18 points, Stephen Jackson had 13, and Greg Foster added 12 points and 11 rebounds for his 13th double-double.

Bucks 112, Bobcats 102

Charlotte, N.C. — Michael Redd scored 39 points in his return to Milwaukee’s lineup, leading the Bucks. Redd, who missed the last three games because of a sprained index finger, was 15-of-24 from the field.
