Area boys: Charities power Tongie

? Free throws have doomed the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team all season, but Tuesday night they were the team’s savior in a 52-41 victory against Perry-Lecompton.

The Chieftains (6-13) went 14-of-19 from the charity stripe and 7-for-7 in the fourth quarter in a game that was close late. Tongie sealed the victory from the free-throw line.

“That has not been a strong suit for us,” Tongie coach David Walker said.

Tongie was led by Sam Mitchell, who dropped a game-high 20 points. Drew Tucker led the Kaws with 10. P-L played without leading scorer Willie Treaster.

The Chieftains will travel Friday to Basehor-Linwood.

Osawatomie 63, Wellsville 48

Wellsville — Austin Bloss led the Eagles with 14 points in the loss. Wellsville (2-17), will travel Friday to Baldwin.

Jackson Heights 66, McLouth 47

McLouth — Jackson Heights (16-4) used nine three-pointers and a 19-8 second-quarter run to hand McLouth its 18th loss of the season.

Kevin Stewart was the lone offensive bright spot for the Bulldogs with 16 points.

McLouth (1-18) will travel Friday to K.C. Christian.

Lansing — Jake Carter led the Chargers with 12 points in the loss.

SFT will play host Friday to Piper on the Chargers’ Senior Night.
