Okie State dominates Texas Tech

Cowboys rout Red Raiders, ascend to tie with KU for first place in Big 12 Conference

? In one quick flurry, JamesOn Curry got hot, and No. 8 Oklahoma State put away Texas Tech.

Curry scored 10 of his 15 points during a 14-2 run that helped the Cowboys pull away early in the second half and beat Texas Tech, 85-56, Saturday to move into a tie for first place in the Big 12 Conference.

Curry hit a three-pointer from the right wing to start the run, and John Lucas III added a fast-break layup, then slashed across the lane on the Cowboys’ next possession and passed the ball to Ivan McFarlin, who dunked it with two hands.

Curry added a jumper from the right wing and a long three-pointer from beyond the top of the key before finishing the run with a right-handed jam on a fast break to make it 54-32 with 13:29 to play.

“Even in high school, I’d get in the crunch time part of the game, and I’d always get 10 points in two minutes or 15 points in three minutes. I’m just that type of player,” Curry said. “When it’s time to be ready, I’m ready.”

Jarrius Jackson brought Texas Tech (16-7 overall, 8-4 Big 12) within 76-55 with a banked three-pointer from the right wing, but Oklahoma State scored the next seven points and emptied its bench after Marcus Dove’s two-handed alley-oop jam made it 83-55.

Lucas finished with 25 points, and Ivan McFarlin had his sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds as Oklahoma State (20-3, 10-2) joined No. 2 Kansas atop the league standings after the Jayhawks lost, 63-61, to Iowa State in overtime earlier Saturday.

The Cowboys were watching the final minutes of that game and got some extra inspiration when they saw Kansas lose moments before tipoff.

“When we found out Iowa State beat Kansas, everybody was hyped in the locker room,” McFarlin said. “It was on us to come out and just play, and that’s what we did. We didn’t worry about somebody making a mistake. We just came out and played and had fun.”

The Cowboys play Feb. 27 at Kansas, and the conference title could be on the line.

Martin Zeno had 19 points, Devonne Giles scored 12, and Ronald Ross added 10 for Texas Tech, which was held below 60 points for only the second time this season.

“Their defense was as good as I have seen in a long time,” Texas Tech coach Bob Knight said.

Tech was hoping for its second win over a top-10 opponent in a week. The Red Raiders beat Kansas in double overtime Monday.

“I am not sure where we are, but I think we are better than we played today,” Knight said. “Our team has had a problem for a long time doing something decently and then coming back and continuing to play that way. They just totally dominated us.”
