Find the perfect gown

One thing brides can agree on is that it’s all about the gown. Great hair and makeup aside, the focus is ultimately on the wedding gown and looking as beautiful as possible on the big day.

Whether you have envisioned your dream dress for years or have no clue where to begin, here is our ultimate gown-buying checklist for all brides. Once you have these five steps covered, you’ll be ready to walk down the aisle in style.

STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET.

Like styles, wedding gowns come in a huge range of prices, anywhere from about $500 to $15,000. Why does one cost thousands more than another? Gowns made on the lower end of the price spectrum are usually produced in larger numbers and with less expensive materials, while couture gowns are made to order and can be handcrafted in luxe fabrics.

Don’t feel bad if your budget doesn’t allow for couture. A reasonably priced gown can look fantastic. In fact, you can find sensational gowns in any price range. When deciding on how much to spend on your gown, a good rule of thumb is to calculate around 10 percent of your total wedding budget and take it from there. Just remember that fittings and alterations, a veil or headpiece, and other accessories including lingerie, shoes and jewelry also need to be factored into your gown budget.

STEP 2: DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

You know your style, body type and budget — now it’s time to start researching. Before you hit the stores, hit the Web and start browsing online. TheKnot.com has collections from more than 150 designers. The site lets you search by designer, style or price.

For example, if you know you want a strapless gown in a certain price range, a list of designers under those criteria will come up. By browsing their collections, you’ll get an idea of which designers best suit you, and you’ll also be able to find out where their gowns are sold in your area. Remember to print out the dresses you like and bring the pictures to your appointments.

STEP 3: DEFINE YOUR STYLE.

Are you chic? Conservative? Bohemian? A glamour girl at heart? Modest — or willing to show a little skin? Before the shopping begins, evaluate your personal style. If you’re the reserved type, a plunging neckline probably isn’t for you.

Similarly, if you’re known for your avant-garde fashion sense, a simple gown may not be your best choice. Once you know what works with your style, finding the right dress will be easy.

Salon salespeople are experts in this area and can easily weed through styles to help you find your dream dress. But aside from style, know your body type. Understand what shapes flatter curvy, tall, petite, boyish and hourglass figures. And keep in mind the time of year your wedding will take place. While a flowing chiffon gown may look beautiful on you, will it suit your winter wedding?

STEP 4: SHOP SMART.

Wedding gown shopping isn’t exactly a trip to the mall. Before you walk out the door, find two or three trusted salons that carry the designer gowns you like. Be sure to call ahead and book appointments — at least one hour at each salon. You’ll want to bring along two people you trust, as well as a bag of the following essentials: a strapless bra, control-top pantyhose, a slip and shoes similar in height to the ones you plan to wear on the day of the wedding.

STEP 5: DON’T RUSH.

Once you have narrowed down your choices, take your time. Sleep on it and go back to try on the gown again. If you’re completely happy with the way you look and can picture yourself walking down the aisle in this dress, you’ve found the one.

Next step: placing your order. Most gowns can be ordered in alternative forms — with or without beading, for example, or in a different fabric or color. Keep in mind that any customization may add to the cost. But if it’s the one, it’ll be worth it.
