You can’t have a neo-religious, special effects-heavy action movie without Keanu Reeves. And “Constantine,” the latest comic-book adaptation to travel this road, proves a step above past misfires like “Hellboy” and “Spawn.” Reeves portays the title character, a terminally ill, paranormal investigator who often carries out exorcisms and prevents underworld minions from mingling with humans.

Also opening in theaters is “Because of Winn-Dixie,” an adaptation of the popular children’s book. The story follows a lonely Florida girl whose life is changed for the better when she adopts a fuzzy rascal of a dog she finds roaming a local supermarket.

And finally, there’s “Son of the Mask,” the Jim Carrey-less sequel to his 1994 hit. Jamie Kennedy fills in, playing an aspiring cartoonist who comes across a mask that transforms the wearer into a shape-shifting superhero.
