Stanford sweeps KU

Seven-run inning difference in nightcap

? Sixth-ranked Stanford scored seven runs in the sixth inning of the nightcap to complete a college baseball doubleheader sweep of Kansas University on Saturday.

Stanford won, 7-3 and 9-2, at Sunken Diamond.

Kansas (6-2) jumped to an early lead in the second game by plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on RBI singles by junior shortstop Ritchie Price and senior catcher Sean Richardson.

Price and Richardson each went 2-for-4.

Kansas starter Clint Schambach (1-1) cruised thought the game’s first five innings allowing only one hit and retiring 10 straight batters entering the sixth inning, when Stanford’s offense erupted to take control.

Three Kansas pitchers surrendered seven runs to the Cardinal on five hits, including a three-run home run by Stanford first baseman John Mayberry, Jr.

The Jayhawks threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with no outs, but could not convert. Junior right fielder A.J. Van Slyke struck out, and center fielder Gus Milner grounded into a double play to end the inning

Stanford (6-2) added two insurance runs in the eighth.

Cardinal junior pitcher Jeff Gilmore (2-0) picked up the win, throwing seven innings and allowing only four hits and one earned run, while striking out six.

Stanford jumped to an early lead in the opener, scoring twice in the first inning. The Jayhawks couldn’t answer until the fourth, when Milner blasted a pitch from Mark Romanczuk (2-1) over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season.

The Cardinal scored again in the second and twice in the fifth. Milner added a solo blast in the sixth that cut the Stanford lead to 5-2.

Sean Land (0-1) picked up the loss for the Jayhawks. He struck out a career-high six Cardinal batters, but allowed seven runs, six earned, on eight hits and six walks.

Matt Baty slapped three hits for the Jayhawks, including an RBI double.

KU will conclude its series with Stanford at 1 p.m. Central time today at Sunken Diamond.
