Jayhawks rout UMKC, 8-0

? Jessica Moppin hit a grand slam, and Nettie Fierros and Destiny Frankenstein also homered Saturday, helping Kansas University’s softball squad run-rule Missouri-Kansas City, 8-0, at the Hilton Classic.

Fierros’ two-run bomb in the second inning scored Frankenstein and gave the Jayhawks a 2-0 lead, then Moppin’s slam in the fourth plated Frankenstein, Fierros and Kassie Humphreys.

The home run was Moppin’s second of the season and 16th of her career. She now is third on the KU career home-run list behind Shannon Stanwix (23) and Leah Tabb (23).

Frankenstein’s homer came in the fifth after Nicole Washburn’s double.

Humphreys (1-2) allowed just one hit in four innings, and Kathy McVey pitched the final inning to seal the shortened victory.

UMKC fell to 0-3.

The Jayhawks also were scheduled to play New Mexico State on Saturday, but that game was canceled because of rain. KU will conclude its play at the Hilton Classic in a noon game today against Utah Valley State.
