KU falters down stretch

? Kansas University’s women’s basketball team led by four at the half and by a point with just under 41/2 minutes to play, but the Jayhawks struggled down the stretch in a 57-54 loss Wednesday to Oklahoma State.

Trailing 29-25 at intermission, the Cowgirls opened the second half with a 15-3 run.

“We gave Oklahoma State a lot of momentum at the start of the second half, and we couldn’t match their intensity,” Kansas coach Bonnie Henrickson said. “We played well early in the game, but we just didn’t play a full 40 minutes tonight.”

The final few minutes were especially difficult for the Jayhawks (10-11 overall, 3-7 Big 12 Conference).

Up 47-46 with 4:21 to play, KU hit just two of its final seven field-goal attempts and two of six free throws. OSU (7-13, 2-8) was 3-for-4 on field goals and 5-for-5 on free throws over that span.

The Jayhawks trailed 55-52 with 37 seconds left in the game when consecutive free throws by Erica Hallman brought Kansas within one, 55-54.

But Christian Hood was fouled and sank two free throws with 29 seconds remaining as Oklahoma State took a 57-54 advantage. A three-point attempt by Hallman that would have tied the game fell short with five seconds left.

KU senior Aquanita Burras lead all scorers with 16 points, while junior Erica Hallman had 15 points and six rebounds. KU’s Crystal Kemp had 15 rebounds to go with seven points in 39 minutes.

The Jayhawks were held to 25.9 percent shooting in the second half and shot 31.6 percent from the field for the game.

Freshman Taleesha Conder notched a double-double for Oklahoma State with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Nina Stone scored 13 points, while sophomore Christian Hood scored 12 points and snagged seven rebounds.

KU will return home to face Colorado on Sunday, Feb. 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
