Shooting suspect to stand trial

A 19-year-old man accused of wounding two people during a December shooting at Boardwalk Apartments, 524 Frontier Road, will stand trial.

Douglas County District Court Judge Michael Malone ruled Wednesday that there was enough evidence that Randy J. Johnson, 19, opened fire on a group of people standing on a second-floor balcony at the apartment to proceed to trial. Johnson has been in Douglas County Jail on four charges of attempted second-degree murder since the Dec. 21 incident.

As a result of the shooting, a 21-year-old Baldwin woman was hit twice in the leg, and a 22-year-old man received a minor injury to his back from a bullet that went through a wooden slat before hitting him.

Malone’s decision came after a lengthy preliminary hearing, which ended Wednesday. The trial is set to begin May 2.
