Jayhawks split pair at Arizona tournament

? Kansas University’s softball squad split a pair of games Saturday at the Arizona Pepsi Classic, beating New Mexico State, 8-4, before falling in the nightcap to Northwestern, 7-1, at Hillenbrand Stadium.

Against New Mexico State, KU rallied from a 4-1 deficit with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Serena Settlemier and Kassie Humphreys each hit two-run home runs, and Destiny Frankenstein, Nettie Fierros and Jackie Vasquez each doubled in the big inning.

Settlemier (1-1) also earned the win in the opener, allowing just three hits and a run in relief of starter Humphreys. Christina Ross struck out the lone batter she faced to seal the victory.

In the nightcap, however, Northwestern took advantage of two KU errors to score four runs in the third inning. KU’s lone run came after a Frankenstein walk and a Settlemier double.

Ross (0-1) picked up the loss in the second game. She allowed eight hits and five runs — two earned — in four innings.

KU will end its play in the tournament at 1 p.m. today against Tulsa.
