Fightin’ Indian women lose nailbiter

? Haskell Indian Nations University couldn’t get over the hump in a 70-67 loss Saturday to Newman University.

Melinda Adams led the Fightin’ Indians with 16 points, Samantha Pete added 15 points and eight assists, and Maria Stevens chipped in 15 points.

Lucita Yesslith had eight points, six assists and four steals for Haskell (8-13), which lost its second close game in two days.

“We were in the game all the way. We had a really good game to watch,” HINU coach Phil Homeratha said. “We shot as well this weekend as we’ve shot all year long and still lost.

“We had a chance to get back in the game, and we come up and don’t get a decent shot at the end. It’s one of the things we’ve been struggling with all year. We can’t make that last shot. We’ve just got to get better.”

Haskell will return home to play host to Peru State at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
