Arlyn G. Smith, Larned
LARNED ? Military graveside services for Arlyn G. Smith, 78, Tucson, Ariz., will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Larned Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, in Tucson.
He was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Rozel, the son of Glee S. and Bernice Smith. He graduated from Kansas University with a journalism degree and was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He moved to Tucson in 1978.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy as a Lieutenant in World War II and the Korean War. He was included in the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C.
He was editor of the Larned Chronoscope and created his own management consulting firm specializing in agriculture and industry. He owned and operated a ranch and wheat farm. He was president of Tucson Executives’ Assn. He served as commander of the American Legion and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the first president of the Lion’s Club in Rozel.
He was a city council member, and Rotary Club president in Kansas and Arizona. He served on the Kansas Geological Survey committee, Girl and Boy Scout finance committees and the Larned Library Board. He was recognized numerous times in Who’s Who in Finance and Industry and Who’s Who in the West. He was a committee member for the state Republican parties in Kansas and Arizona. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Larned, where he served as a trustee, and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Tucson. He taught Sunday school.
He married Jacqueline Houdyshell. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Arlyn G. Jr., Wichita; twin daughters, Denise Smith, Dallas, and Dana Hines, Tucson; a brother, Glee S. Smith, Jr., Lawrence; five grandchildren; a stepgrandchild; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned.
The family suggests memorials to any veterans’ organization, animal charity or the donor’s choice.
