Old Home Town

25 years ago today: Ned Cushing, 42-year-old Downs banker, was named to the Kansas Board of Regents by Gov. William Avery, along with Henry Bubb of Topeka and Dwight Klinger of Ashland. Bubb and Klinger were reappointments. Cushing (now a resident of Lawrence) was a widely known KU graduate and replaced Salina editor Whitley Austin on the board.

100 years ago toady: From the Lawrence Daily World of Dec. 30, 1905: “A black and tan fox hound belonging to James McKissac went mad yesterday afternoon and made two vicious attacks on its master before it was finally killed. The dog first tried to attack a neighbor lady who rushed into the house to escape. Two vicious leaps were warded off by a club in the hands of McKissac but that failed to work so he ran into the house, got a gun and shot the raging brute. In all the cases of hydrophobia of late, this is the first time a human has been attacked. The mad dog situation is becoming worse and alertness is required to prevent new trouble.”
