Police say suspect they killed was dangerous

December 28, 2005

— Police officers shot and killed a man brandishing a knife in a confrontation that was partially videotaped by a bystander, setting off another internal investigation of the embattled department.

Monday's daylight shooting on a busy street was the first involving police since New Orleans reopened after Hurricane Katrina. It follows the videotaped police beating of a man that led to two firings in the department.

A police spokesman, Sgt. David Adams, said Tuesday that the officers who fired on the man were reassigned pending the outcome of the probe, but he defended their response, saying at least one officer's life was in danger just before the barrage of gunfire.

You guys must have some inside information--I didn't see the race of the man in the article.

the article didn't specify race but i saw the video tape on tv. the man was black and the police had circled the man-he could have been shot in the leg/arm and would have fallen to the ground or dropped the knife-either way he then could have been gotten to safely by police--they didn't all have to shoot him at once

Maybe they just should have shot the knife out of his hand.

In Hollywood they might have shot the knife out of his hand or "dropped the leg". I can just see some LEO telling a suspect, "Now hold real still while I take careful aim at your hand." In real life you shoot center mass until the threat is isn't a threat anymore.

That was my point. A man taking a knife into a gunfight is going to get killed. I would hope the autopsy shows that there are 9 bullets in Hayes, since 9 were fired. I fired expert on the range, and on the battlefield. I can't hit an arm or a leg.
