Old home town – 100 years ago today

From the Lawrence Daily World of Dec. 27, 1905: “Another mad dog was shot yesterday by policeman Harry Elder at the corner of Leo and Ohio Street. The dog was a medium-sized black cur and was apparently a stray. It was frothing at the mouth and running up and down Tennessee and Ohio streets. It was the fourth mad dog to be killed here in recent times. Some say it is an outbreak of rabies, others think poison could be involved. : Several churches have held Christmas services in the last two days even though the holiday has passed. They say there was too much work to get the services done before Dec. 25. : More than 1,000 Kansas teachers are in session at a convention in Topeka : We get news that some criminal chopped down a beautiful Christmas tree in a local yard, and it is difficult to understand such a mentality. : The YMCA has received a new check for $1,000 from Congressman Bowersock, which completes the fund-raising needed to open and sustain the new building, now clear of any debt.”
