Emil Heck Jr., Jim Owens and Dr. W.F. Bradley had been voted to the interim board of education for new Lawrence School District 497 in a special election. Defeated were Ray Culbertson, Charles Oldfather and Don Breithaupt. Only 2,424 people voted, and citizen interest had been distressingly low throughout the short campaign.
Ron Lang, Kansas University sophomore basketball player from Leavenworth, underwent emergency brain surgery at Fitzsimmons General Hospital in Denver. A benign tumor was removed and full recovery was anticipated. Lang later returned briefly to the KU roster and eventually became Lawrence High School head basketball coach. He has remained on the LHS faculty through 2005.
