K-League teams play for fun of the game

The first season of basketball wrapped up for many kids in Lawrence on Saturday as they played in the final round of games for the kindergarten recreation league.

The kindergarten Team 1 won their last game of the year against the Jayhawks 16-14 at the Community Building.

Team 1 head coach Michael Homeyman said he was happy with his team’s play because they did all the little things that coaches asked.

“They did good today, and you can’t ask for anything more than just passing the ball, trying to score baskets and having fun,” Homeyman said. “Those are the most important things.”

Guard Kelly Wiggins led her team on offense by aggressively attacking the basket when she got the ball. Wiggins liked to drive to the hoop, but she also liked to launch long-distance shots over the outstretched arms of the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks had a sharpshooter of their own on offense. Guard Cole Narcomey knocked down two long-range shots to help keep his team in the game. Narcomey wasn’t afraid to fire up a shot from anywhere on the court.

Even though Team 1 went home with the official victory, Homeyman said the kindergarten games are more about having fun than keeping score.

Team 1 guard Kelly Wiggins sticks her tongue out before she fires up a shot against the Jayhawks Saturday at the Community Building.

“It’s just fun watching the kids progress throughout the season,” Homeyman said. “After the first time we ever played the kids just got better and better. We’ve watched how much experience they gain throughout the year. That’s probably the most fun, just watching the kids gain experience and see how much better they get.”

Jayhawks head coach Lucas Houk also said the season is about having fun.

“It’s been really fun, especially since the kids have started to share the ball a little more,” Houk said.

However, the Jayhawks may have had other things besides basketball on their minds going into the final game of the year.

“Today all the kids were more worried about Christmas and the pizza party they were having following the game” Houk said. “But they’re definitely maturing a lot and it’s been really exciting watching them grow.”

The Kindergarten Team 1 and Jayhawks all look up for a rebound Saturday at the Lawrence Community Building.

Even with the distractions of the holidays and the end of the season celebrations the Jayhawks played a close game all the way to the final whistle. Houk said the team has made strides all season long to get better.

“I thought they played really good this season,” Houk said. “Their defense has definitely come along a long way and they’re starting to pass the ball more. I think since the beginning of the season they’ve really turned around a lot.”

Now both Team 1 and the Jayhawks have a full year to recoup before their next end-of-the-season pizza party.
