Falcons’ defense creates scoring chances

Dunbar provides Falcons offensive spark, leads all scorers with 6 points

Hoping to end the season on a high note, the third- and fourth-grade Falcons and Phog came out on a fiery pace. While both teams looked to establish an up-tempo game, it was the Falcons’ defensive play that won the game 14-6 against the Phog Saturday at Holcom Park Center.

With the defense in lockdown mode, the Falcons were able to take advantage of a hot touch on the offensive end to secure the win and end the season on a high note.

“We were hustling for the ball all game,” said Falcon head coach Jeff Bandle. “They were not afraid of the ball, which led to our good shooting and some nice outside shots.”

Early on the Falcons turned to point guard Kaitlin Dunbar, who took advantage of her speed and good ball control to score the game’s opening points. Dunbar’s ability to create around the hoop enabled her to lead all scorers with six points.

With Dunbar providing the offensive spark, Falcon guard Madeline Dieker used tenacious defense to slow the Phog attack. Dieker’s quick footwork and defensive positioning limited the Phog from penetrating to the basket and getting easy looks.

With the Falcons limiting the inside shot, the Phog turned to outside shooting specialist Caly Ingle. Ingle was able to connect on a couple of midrange shots that helped loosen the Falcons’ grip around the basket.

Now with space to maneuver, forward Hannah Copp was able to use her height and excellent footwork to establish a presence near the hoop for the Phog. Copp gave the Phog several second-chance scoring opportunities after taking control of the offensive rebounds.

With the Phog making a late push, forward Meredith Morriss provided a spark off the bench for the Falcons. Morriss answered Copp’s challenge, focusing her energy on getting rebounds and playing tough defense.

Looking to secure the win, Dunbar came up with a clutch steal and raced full court for a back-breaking lay-in for the Falcons.
